The origin of phulkari can not exactly be traced. Reference of Punjabi embroidery though goes back to 2000 years back to the vedic ages. Phulkari has been mentioned in the famous tale of Heer-Ranjha by the poet Waris Shah. Its present form and popularity goes back to 15th century, during Maharaja Ranjit Singh's Reign.

The ladies used to make these for personal use. It was included in the bridal trousseau. It was considered auspicious. There is a different phulkari for every occasion. The art was learnt by the daughter from her mother just as she learnt other chores.

Now days Phulkari just isn't a old Punjabi traditional art piece -but made in a new trendy way to add stylish chic effect to your look!!

Javeda 2010 Collection

Having established a loyal local following, Javeda is known for its unique designs where being distinct is limitless. At the age of 16, blooming designer Aman Dhalay developed a passion for interior design that evolved into an enthusiasm for creativity in fashion design.

Using her background in interior decorating and her keen eye for detail, Aman created the Javeda fashion brand in March of 2009. Much like decorating homes, each of Aman’s designer pieces for Javeda are one-of-a-kind.

How exactly does her genius work? Like every great designer, Aman starts with a vision. She’ll dream up an outfit at a moment’s notice – anything can be the source of her inspiration. Then, she picks colour combinations and fabric textures, which she says can make or break an outfit. Next, she sketches and designs casual and formal outfits based on what she envisioned at the start. This includes thinking up embroidery patterns and styles, jewels and embellishments, and how the garment should be cut and stitched. Her designs are sent to India for manufacturing, where her vision comes to life.

Aman isn’t adverse to creating designs specifically for her clients.

Says Aman,” Sometimes a client will come to me with an idea or color preference and we collaborate to come up with a suitable, one-of-a-kind outfit.”

Manish Malhotra - Spring-Summer 2010

With a background as an artist painting canvasses, fashion designer Manish Malhotra’s creations are sensible amalgamations of colour and femininity. Manish Malhotra’s Spring-Summer collection was a palette consisting primarily of neutral hues paired with red, green, and gold with cuts, prints, and embroidery that paid homage to his roots as a painter.

If his recent Tweets are any indication of what’s to come, it seems as though Malhotra’s muse is his current journey to Prague, the setting for an upcoming Bollywood film he’s doing the costume design for. After reading a column he wrote for the Hindustan Times, it seems Malhotra is inspired by the old architecture, specifically carvings, finishings, and bursts of colour. This could easily be translated into fitted formal wear in neutral colours with splashes of vibrant, and embroidery that look as though it’s been painted onto the fabric, rather than stitched. Expect to see blues and blacks as his neutrals, with bright reds, pinks, yellows, purples, and greens in the mix.

The beauty in Malhotra’s creations is that they're workable combinations of couture and prêt – his risks tend to be in the colours and the embroidery. But he understands the importance of flow and fit, and the right cuts for a woman’s body, resulting in the consistency that makes him a favourite amongst the fantasy of Bollywood and real-life brides alike.
